Hey! Long time…

Wow! It’s been a long time since I made a blog post. I’ve been all over the place. I’ve started a new brand customizing trimmers called Artisan Bladez, working on a new solo show in May, and still cutting hair (which has been so demanding). Oh! I almost forgot to mention that I still work a 9-5. I recently had a baby boy….he’ll be 2 months in 10 days. He’s such a handsome kid, and he’s so alert. The first night I brought him home he actually scanned the bedroom to seek approval of his new home. It was like he’d been here before. Does anyone believe in reincarnation? I’m not quite sure if I believe in reincarnation, since I was raised to believe in another philosophy. However, I’ve been doing research and opening my spectrum of understanding by keeping an open mind.

In May, I plan to have an exhibition at NYCH Art Gallery. This will be my 3rd solo exhibition there. The concept is a bit vague, but I’m on the path to making clarifications. Sometimes I either make the concept too simple or it becomes to vast. That’s where I tend to over think an idea and that places my brain on “overload”. However, the concept is formed around the beauty and essence of AFROPUNK, but with a twist. So look out for that on May 12th.

Which brings me to explain the long hiatus on my blog. The other day one of my colleagues and I was chatting a bit and we somehow came across my blog. I stated that I was looking for someone to aid me with my blog. Because I felt I didn’t have the time to write or get more content. He addressed to me that my blog was no longer a blog, but just a website collecting spam. At first I was surprise and a bit offended that he said such words, but then it struck a fire in me. I mean, I’ve created Soulful Artistry with compassion and great enthusiasm in the beginning, but I haven’t written anything in a year…or two (What Happened!?!). He also stated that I should reflect on more forms of artistry, and not just visual art. NOW! When he said that. I started thinking I could incorporate and describe what I’m doing in my other brands as well. That got me more motivated to start writing again and bring back Soulful Artistry. I guess I need to hear some words like that to get me off my feet.  Gotta stay consistent and stay focused on the reward.

This is going to be another great journey.

Also, if you haven’t been able to capture the Farewell 44 Exhibit which is being displayed at NYCH Art Gallery, at 643 W. 18th st. You still got time. It’s showing from NOW until April.

Last Thursday at the Shrine (@theshrinechi) I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the lovely Elle Varner (@ellevarner). I must say that this woman can sing, a performer and is truly some eye candy. Her voice is raspy, silvery,  smoky, but  also hitting those high pitches that we love.  I caught her doing a few sexy salsa moves on the stage. She opened with “Cold Case” from her sophomore album and performed her hit single “Refill”, “F#@$ It All”, “Don’t Really Want to Dance”, and also “I Only Want to Give it  to You”. I loved how she mentioned that she “love folks that are weird, Chicago is weird, and that she’s weird”. I must say that many individuals have told me on many occasions that I’m weird, strange, quarky, and awkward. The moment that she was having issues with the sound, and talking to her guitar was priceless. I cherished that moment because it was relatively familiar in acts that I do.

Meeting Elle for the first time was nerve reckoning, I felt like I had a frog in my throat which seems to make me talk even lower. I’m pretty sure she probably heard maybe two or three words come from my mouth.  Anyways, I painted a portrait of her, that I knew she would love However, if you look at the image closely. I had a few minor adjustments that needed to be done. While doing this painting everyone looked at it and said “Oh it looks great. It looks just like her”. I knew there were a few issues with this painting. Also this picture was captured and use as reference from her video “Don’t Really Want To Dance” featuring A$AP Ferg. Check it out…

Also, here’s a small video of her performance on Friday night…

So,  I was able to get a picture with her, and the painting… she was all smiles. Her new album 4 Letter Word is expected to be released this fall.

Update on LOVE BOX Event…

LOVE BOX by Adam Guichard and a host of wonderful artist put on a terrific show and performance. A live band, spoken word, and sensual artwork went very well with the theme. There were so many beautiful works of art…it ignites by creative energy. I receive such enlightenment and joy when I see artist come together, share ideas, and laugh in harmony. To check out some pictures please visit Kay Joe Unscripted page on Facebook. Kay Joe is a spoken word artist and photographer. I’m pretty certain that this gentleman possess more skills within the art realm. Nevertheless, he has an event featuring other spoken word artist called  One Night Only on 2.23. 2013 (Saturday).

Also, I was able to sell another piece at the event. I have a bit of a hard time letting it (artwork) go. For some reason I gain an attachment to my work, and have a hard time letting go. I called this piece “Missing My Love”. The buyer and I had a conversation regarding the different views from what we gathered from the piece. Maybe you can tell me your opinion or view on this body of work.

This piece express love, but a type of love that causes separation anxiety. When you haven’t been away from the person you love for long period of time and then they are leaving for the weekend. It’s only the weekend, but all these thoughts are clouding your mind and judgement. So the relevant question would be “What time are you coming back?” or “When?”.
